A favorite talking point as of late has been the falling confidence in our institutions, whether it be government, Wall Street, the media, etc. I think that another addition needs to be added to this list: university degrees. Now, we've all heard people joke about useless degrees like "lesbian dance theory", but some majors, mainly those in STEM, are still held in high regard. This is a mistake. I graduated from a top 20 university, where the ACT 25/75 percentiles are 33 and 35, with a BS in chemical engineering. I'm smart but not exceptionally so, and my work ethic is pretty dependent on how much I enjoy what I'm doing, which in the case of engineering was about 0. Even then, despite the fact that I always left my homework to the last minute and hardly studied, I still managed a 3.33. While my degree did in fact teach me things, made me smarter, and wasn't a total waste of money, the fact that successfully I bullshitted through it shows there's a problem....
